How the Blood Pressure Calculator Works
This tool interprets your blood pressure values according to the ESC/ESH 2023 (European Society of Cardiology / European Society of Hypertension) classification guidelines. It also calculates mean arterial pressure (MAP) and pulse pressure, two important indicators for cardiovascular health.
Blood Pressure Classification
| Classification | Systolic | Diastolic |
|---|---|---|
| Optimal | < 120 | < 80 |
| Normal | 120-129 | 80-84 |
| High Normal | 130-139 | 85-89 |
| Grade 1 Hypertension | 140-159 | 90-99 |
| Grade 2 Hypertension | 160-179 | 100-109 |
| Grade 3 Hypertension | ≥ 180 | ≥ 110 |
Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP)
MAP represents the average effective pressure in the arterial circulation. It is calculated as: MAP = diastolic + 1/3 x (systolic - diastolic). Normal MAP values are between 70 and 100 mmHg.
Pulse Pressure
Pulse pressure is simply the difference between systolic and diastolic. Normal values are between 30 and 50 mmHg. A high pulse pressure (above 60 mmHg) indicates greater arterial stiffness and is associated with increased cardiovascular risk.
