Calculate Your Cat's Age in Human Years
For cats too, the "multiply by 7" rule is a myth. Cats mature rapidly in their first year of life and then age more gradually. This calculator uses the non-linear veterinary formula recommended by the American Association of Feline Practitioners.
The Formula
- First year: 15 human years. At 12 months a cat is already sexually mature and nearly physically adult.
- Second year: +9 years. At 2 years a cat is equivalent to a 24-year-old young adult.
- Each subsequent year: +4 human years. The ratio stabilizes at about 4:1.
Cat Life Stages
The International Cat Care and AAFP define six stages: Kitten (0-6 months), Junior (7 months-2 years), Adult (3-6 years), Mature (7-10 years, equivalent to 44-56 human years), Senior (11-14 years), and Super Senior (15+ years).
Indoor vs. Outdoor Cats
An indoor cat lives on average 14-18 years, while a stray cat has a life expectancy of only 3-5 years, due to dangers like traffic, disease, and malnutrition. Neutering, vaccinations, proper nutrition, and regular vet visits are key factors for a long, healthy life.
Fun Facts About Long-Lived Cats
The longest-lived documented cat was Creme Puff, a Texas cat who lived 38 years and 3 days (1967-2005), equivalent to about 168 human years. Mixed-breed cats tend to be slightly longer-lived than purebreds.
