How the Chinese Zodiac Calculator Works
The Chinese zodiac (Shengxiao) is one of the oldest astrological systems in the world, with over 2,000 years of history. Unlike the Western zodiac based on months, the Chinese zodiac assigns an animal to each year in a 12-year cycle.
The 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals
According to legend, the Jade Emperor organized a race among the animals to determine the zodiac order. The 12 winners, in order of arrival, became the zodiac signs: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
The Five Elements
Each animal combines with one of the five elements (Wu Xing): Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each element governs two consecutive years, creating a complete cycle of 60 years (12 animals x 5 elements).
The formula to determine the element: subtract 4 from the birth year, the remainder when divided by 10 indicates the element (0-1 = Wood, 2-3 = Fire, 4-5 = Earth, 6-7 = Metal, 8-9 = Water).
Yin and Yang
Even years are Yang (masculine, active, expansive) and odd years are Yin (feminine, receptive, introspective). This polarity adds another dimension to the personality of the sign.
The Chinese Zodiac in Modern Culture
In China and much of East Asia, the Chinese zodiac is still very present in daily life. It influences decisions about marriages (checking sign compatibility), business (choosing lucky dates), and even family planning: Dragon years traditionally see an increase in births due to its reputation as a lucky sign.
