How the Discount Calculator Works
This calculator lets you quickly compute the discounted price and savings from the original price and discount percentage. It is the ideal tool during sales, Black Friday, or any promotional event.
The Discount Formula
The calculation is straightforward:
- Savings = Original price x Discount percentage / 100
- Discounted price = Original price - Savings
For example, a product priced at $150 with a 30% discount: savings = 150 x 30 / 100 = $45, and the final price is 150 - 45 = $105.
Watch Out for Stacked Discounts
When multiple discounts are applied in sequence (cascading discounts), the final result differs from the sum of percentages. A 20% discount followed by an additional 10% is not the same as 30%: the second discount is applied to the already-reduced price. In this case, the final price is 72% of the original (not 70%).
When to Use This Calculator
This tool is useful for:
- Comparing deals during sales, Black Friday, and promotions
- Verifying the real price after a discount before purchasing
- Calculating actual savings on one or more products
- Sharing the result with friends and family
The calculation accounts for rounding to the cent, always giving you a precise and usable result.
