How to Calculate Your Dog's Food Portion
Proper nutrition is essential for your dog's health. This calculator estimates the ideal daily portion based on the energy requirement formula recommended by WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association).
The Energy Requirement Formula
The calculation starts with RER (Resting Energy Requirement):
RER = 70 x body weight^0.75
This base value is multiplied by two factors:
- Age factor: puppies need more energy for growth (x2.5), adults have standard needs (x1.6), seniors need less (x1.2)
- Activity factor: a sedentary dog needs fewer calories (x0.85) compared to a very active one (x1.3)
Dry Food vs. Wet Food
The main difference is caloric density: kibble provides about 3,500 kcal/kg, wet food only about 1,000 kcal/kg (due to 75-80% water content). That's why wet food portions are about 3-4 times larger than dry food for the same calories.
Factors That Affect Portion Size
- Spaying/neutering: sterilized dogs tend to gain weight and may need 10-20% fewer calories
- Breed: some breeds (Labrador, Beagle) are prone to obesity; others (Greyhound, Border Collie) burn more
- Temperature: in winter, requirements may increase 10-15%, especially for outdoor dogs
- Health: pregnancy, lactation, and illness can significantly modify requirements
