Dog Vaccine Schedule: Complete Guide
This calculator helps you understand which vaccines your dog needs and when to get them, based on age, lifestyle, and vaccines already received. The schedule follows WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) 2022 guidelines.
Core and Non-Core Vaccines
Core vaccines (recommended for all dogs): Distemper (CDV), Infectious Hepatitis (CAV), and Parvovirus (CPV). These three are combined in a trivalent vaccine called DHP and represent the minimum essential for every dog.
Non-core vaccines (recommended based on risk): Leptospirosis (transmitted by rats and stagnant water), Rabies (required for international travel), Parainfluenza and Bordetella (protect against "kennel cough").
The Puppy Vaccination Cycle
The puppy is born protected by maternal antibodies, which gradually decline. The vaccination cycle starts at 6-8 weeks with 3 doses: 6-8 weeks (first DHP), 10-12 weeks (second DHP + Leptospirosis dose 1), 14-16 weeks (third DHP + Leptospirosis dose 2 + Rabies if needed).
Adult Boosters
After the puppy cycle, the first booster is at 12 months. Subsequently: DHP every 3 years (WSAVA guidelines show immunity lasts at least 3 years), Leptospirosis annually, and Rabies every 1-3 years depending on vaccine used.
Costs and Where to Vaccinate
The puppy vaccination cycle costs approximately $150-350 (3 sessions with examination). Annual boosters cost $40-100 per session. Prices vary significantly by region and veterinary practice.
