Generate Your Elvish Name
This generator transforms your first and last name into an elvish name inspired by Sindarin, the language of the Grey Elves created by J.R.R. Tolkien for "The Lord of the Rings."
How the Algorithm Works
The generator uses three components to create the elvish name:
- Prefix: determined by the first letter of the name. Vowels generate prefixes like "Ar-", "El-", "Ir-", while consonants produce open syllables typical of Sindarin.
- Middle syllable: derived from the internal consonants of the name, mapped to sounds reminiscent of Tolkien's elvish languages.
- Suffix: deterministically selected from typical endings like "-iel", "-wen", "-dil", which in Sindarin often indicate concepts like "daughter of," "maiden," or "friend."
Tolkien's Languages
J.R.R. Tolkien was first and foremost a linguist. A professor of Anglo-Saxon and then of English Language and Literature at Oxford, he created the elvish languages even before writing the stories of Middle-earth. As he said himself: "The invention of languages is the foundation. The stories were made rather to provide a world for the languages than the reverse."
Sindarin is inspired by Welsh phonetics, with soft sounds, many vowels, and liquid consonants (l, r). Quenya, the other great elvish language, is inspired by Finnish and Latin.
Fun Facts
The most famous elvish names in Tolkien's books all have precise meanings: Galadriel means "maiden crowned with radiant light," Legolas means "green leaf," and Elrond means "star dome." Every element of the name carries a poetic meaning.
