How the Golf Handicap Calculator Works
The handicap in golf is a system that allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly. This calculator uses the World Handicap System (WHS) formula, the worldwide standard introduced in 2020 by R&A and USGA.
The Handicap Differential Formula
Handicap Differential = (Score - Course Rating) x 113 / Slope Rating
Where:
- Score: actual strokes played (gross)
- Course Rating: course difficulty for a scratch player
- Slope Rating: relative difficulty for an average player (standard: 113)
- 113: normalization constant (standard Slope Rating)
What Is the Net Score
Net Score = Gross Score - Handicap Differential
The net score allows comparing performances of players with different handicaps in the same event.
The WHS System
The World Handicap System calculates a player's Handicap Index from the average of the best 8 handicap differentials from the last 20 rounds played.
