How the Water Footprint Calculator Works
This tool lets you estimate your personal daily water consumption based on your everyday habits. The calculation accounts for all major domestic uses: personal hygiene, toilet flushing, appliances, garden irrigation, and car washing.
How Water Consumption Is Calculated
Domestic water use is obtained by summing the liters used for each activity:
- Shower: a standard showerhead delivers about 2.4 gal (9 liters) per minute. An 8-minute shower uses about 19 gallons (72 liters)
- Toilet flush: each use consumes 1.6-2.4 gallons (6-9 liters, average 7 liters with a standard tank)
- Faucets: handwashing, teeth brushing, and kitchen use account for about 8 gallons (30 liters) per day
- Washing machine: a full cycle requires about 13 gallons (50 liters)
- Dishwasher: a standard cycle uses about 3 gallons (12 liters)
Tips to Reduce Your Water Footprint
- Install low-flow aerators on all faucets (savings up to 50%)
- Replace the toilet with a dual-flush model (0.8/1.6 gal instead of 2.4)
- Reduce showers to 5 minutes and turn off the water while lathering
- Run washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads
- Collect rainwater for garden irrigation
- Fix leaks: a dripping faucet wastes up to 5 gallons (20 liters) per day
