How to Calculate Drink Calories
This calculator shows you how many calories your favorite beverage contains, from a simple espresso to the most elaborate cocktails. For each drink you get calories, sugars, fat, and protein, plus an intuitive comparison with a pizza and the walking time needed to burn the calories.
Most and Least Caloric Drinks
- Light drinks (under 50 kcal per serving): espresso, unsweetened tea, tonic water
- Moderate drinks (50-150 kcal): cappuccino, lager, spritz, prosecco
- Calorie-dense drinks (150-300 kcal): smoothies, Pina Colada, Long Island
The most common mistake is underestimating liquid calories: a couple of cocktails at dinner can add 400-500 kcal, equivalent to a plate of pasta.
Calories from Alcohol vs. Sugar
Ethanol provides 7 kcal per gram, nearly double that of carbohydrates (4 kcal/g). This means that even "dry" drinks like red wine or a Negroni, despite having little sugar, are caloric due to the alcohol. The most caloric cocktails combine both sources: alcohol and sugary syrups or juices.
The Impact of Sugar and Milk
Two teaspoons of sugar in your coffee add about 40 kcal and 10 g of sugars. Someone who drinks 3-4 coffees a day can easily consume 120-160 extra kcal from sugar alone. Whole milk adds more calories and fat than skim or plant-based alternatives. Almond milk is the lowest-calorie option.
