How the Menstrual Cycle Calculator Works
This calculator predicts your next period date, fertile window, and ovulation day based on your average cycle length. It uses the calendar method, the same principle behind menstrual tracking apps.
The Calculation Method
The menstrual cycle is counted from the first day of menstruation to the day before the next one. The average length is 28 days, but the normal range is 21 to 35 days (ACOG).
The calculator uses three main formulas:
- Next period = last period date + average cycle length
- Ovulation = next period date - 14 days (standard luteal phase length)
- Fertile window = from 5 days before ovulation to 1 day after
The luteal phase (from ovulation to the first day of the next cycle) has a relatively constant duration of about 14 days in most women. It is the follicular phase (from menstruation to ovulation) that varies.
The Fertile Window
The fertile window is the period when conception is possible. It lasts about 6 days because sperm can survive up to 5 days in the female reproductive tract, and the egg is viable for about 12-24 hours after ovulation. The probability of conception is highest in the 2 days before ovulation (about 25-30% per cycle).
When the Calculation Is Less Reliable
The calendar method works well with regular cycles. Reliability decreases with irregular cycles, perimenopause, post-partum and breastfeeding, stress, travel, and conditions like PCOS.
