How Many Calories Does Swimming Burn?
Swimming is one of the most complete and effective sports for calorie expenditure. Water provides natural resistance that forces the body to work harder than many land activities, simultaneously engaging all major muscle groups.
The Calculation Formula
Calorie expenditure in swimming is calculated using MET values (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) from the Compendium of Physical Activities by Ainsworth: Calories = MET x weight (kg) x duration (hours)
MET values vary significantly by stroke and intensity: Freestyle: 5.8 (light) to 10.5 (intense); Backstroke: 4.8 to 9.5; Breaststroke: 5.3 to 10.3; Butterfly: 8.0 to 13.8; Mixed: 5.5 to 10.0.
Practical Example
A person weighing 75 kg swimming freestyle for 45 minutes at moderate intensity: MET 8.0, duration 0.75 hours, Calories = 8.0 x 75 x 0.75 = 450 kcal, Calories per minute = 10 kcal/min, Fat equivalent = 58.4 g.
Benefits of Swimming for Health
Swimming is recommended by the WHO as an ideal activity for all ages. It is low-impact on joints, improves cardiovascular capacity and flexibility, and can be practiced by people with joint or back problems.
